Andrew first went to Tanzania in 1967 as an ODI Fellow assigned to the Planning Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture. Four years later he moved to teach in the economics department of the University of Dar es Salaam. He left Tanzania in 1976 and worked in Bradford, Sheffield, and Birmingham University. After retiring in 2009 he renewed his links with Tanzania, visiting regularly and becoming Chair of BTS between 2015 and 2018. His book Tanzania: A Political Economy was published in 1982, with a second edition in 2013, and he co-authored a book about agriculture in Tanzania, Increasing Production from the Land, in 2018.
